Sweaty Palms: Mapping the Palmar Nerves

rayon embroidery thread, EL wire, window screen material, steel ammo box, adhesives, varnish

dimensions variable (roughly 23” tall)

In "Sweaty Palms: Mapping the Palmar Nerves," an ammo box dating from the 1960s becomes a streamlined, contemporary form of reliquary. The hand – a secular relic – suggests amputation in war. The nerves running up the palm, rendered in electroluminescent wire, emit an anxious hum.

Nervous System and other structures

I'm currently focusing on a series of intricate, sculptural representations of human organs. Each sculpture incorporates electroluminescent wire and/or another form of lighting. The first two projects of this new series, "Sweaty Palms: Mapping the Palmar Nerves," and "Murmur," are pictured on this page.

Ideas for future works include a nervous system uneasily resting on crates that once contained dynamite, a bladder and accompanying urinary anatomy housed in an antique bedpan, a digestive system in a vintage Pyrex casserole and a pair of lungs in an old cigar box.

Partly about frailty, resilience and the delicate balance required to maintain health, Nervous System also refers to relics and reliquaries, venerated bodily organs and the shrines containing them. There is an absorbing implication that essence of spirit or soul resides in our earthly remains. I both respect and am fascinated by the worship of individual body parts.
